Don't be fooled by the label "waterproof" that is floating out there in terms of labels for inkjet printers. Most of the waterproof inkjet labels are made from vinyl and are most water-resistant than waterproof. The science behind how these things work at that the vinyl is coated with a substance that absorbs the ink and locks it into place. The problem arises when there is too much ink and not enough coating so the print bleeds or still smears when touched. There are labels that can be bought out there which claim to be waterproof with a buyback guarantee, but be sure to read the fine print because we live in a capitalist world and it may be more hassle to get your money back than it's worth.

Also when dealing with waterproof inkjet labels, you may have to adjust your printer settings. Make sure the paper type for your printer, most often found under the advanced settings when you go to print, and select premium paper or even labels if your printer has that option. Also make sure to turn down the ink volume so that the waterproof coating can compensate accordingly. This is generally done by going into the advanced setting as well and adjusting the graphic quality. While a photo quality printing may sound like it will give wonderful results, this just basically means "I'll use a ton of unnecessary ink". Another tip is sometimes the labels need to be rinsed off after they're used, especially if your printer has a tendency to use a lot of ink or the labels may not be extremely high quality. It's a pretty simple thing to do, once you've printed what you want let it air dry for awhile so that the coating has time to absorb all the ink as needed. Then just run the print under water and pat dry.

There is a way to get waterproof results without having to buy expensive waterproof labels as well. Or there is another step that can be used to add protection to your waterproof labels. Just buy a can of Krylon top-coating spray. It can be found in any store that sells house paint like a hardware store or a discount department store. It looks like spray paint, but it provides a wonderful matte finish that holds the ink into place and resists water just as well, if not better, than the coating on the waterproof inkjet labels. Just remember that if you are going to use your own top-coat to put it on the print-out in a well ventilated areas because it has nasty chemicals and could result in headaches or other unhappy side-effects.
